How Much Should I Pay: 2007 BMW 328i

Queen of the Road: Hi M. Welcome to AutoBragBlog! $30.9k is too high. Even though it’s CPO, it’s still on the high side. Here a fair range for you and the dealers ($24,100 to $28,000), but with the CPO, it should be around $28k.

For a 2007 BMW 328i Sedan with 10,500 miles, wholesale prices range from $25,700 (being in above average condition) to $23,800 (being in average condition) and $22,000 (being in below average condition).

A fair range for a dealership sell it for +12%-14% more than wholesale, so their estimated retail prices could range from $24,100 to $28,000. A private seller will usually aim to sell it for 5%-10%.

Check the carfax and do plenty of research on the history of the vehicle. Ask for their maintenance records. You can even bring a mechanic for a brief inspection. Here’s a good article to read before continuing: Car Buying Tips From An Insider. Let me know if you have any further car questions.

Good luck and keep us posted on how the purchase go

Cars are hottest new item from Gaza tunnels

GAZA CITY — A shiny green Volkswagen, standing out among the rattletraps on Gaza's dilapidated roads, is the latest hot item to come out of the besieged territory's smuggling tunnels.

Cars are brought in piece by piece from Egypt, which only opens its sole crossing point into Gaza for humanitarian purposes, because of an embargo imposed by Israel two years ago.

A handful of the hundreds of smuggling tunnels in the Rafah border area are dedicated solely to the auto operation that started a few years ago. The entrepreneurs who run them say they've managed to bring in 30 to 40 vehicles in the past few months alone.

Hamas, the Islamist movement that violently seized power in the Gaza Strip in June 2007, controls at least two of the car tunnels, according to operators who spoke under pseudonyms because of the sensitive nature of their work.

"We receive a car in four sections plus the motor," says Abu Bilal, a mechanic who, like others involved in the enterprise, gave an assumed name.

"We verify that everything is OK and then we begin to reassemble it right away," he says, as his team prepares to get to work on a 2004 BMW fresh from the subterranean passages.

"We need two weeks to reassemble a car, since we have to solder the pieces and repaint the body," Abu Bilal says. "The client chooses the colour."

Tunnel operators buy the sections -- mostly from stolen or repossessed vehicles -- in Egypt.

"Smuggling cars is more difficult than smuggling fuel, for example, since we are dealing with large pieces that can be detected and this means a lot more care has to be taken during transport, since Egyptian security on the other end are watching carefully," Abu Bilal says.

The business is lucrative, at least by the standards of the impoverished coastal strip.

"A car on the Egyptian side costs us 6,000 to 10,000 dollars on average," says Abu Saed, another trafficker. "Once we re-assemble and repaint it, we sell it for at least double that."

But it is also a risky business.

One of the tunnels was hit last week by the Israeli air force. "After that raid, car smuggling was briefly halted," a smuggler said.

The Israeli military usually targets smuggling tunnels in retaliation for attacks from Gaza on the Jewish state. The tunnels are used to bring in supplies as well as weapons into the impoverished territory.

Tunnel operators say Egypt too is increasingly cracking down on the underground smuggling, by pumping sewage or gas or by throwing explosives into the tunnels.

In his Gaza City auto shop, Abdel Sattar is putting the final touches on a 2009 Mitsubishi four-by-four that has just been assembled and repainted gray.

"It's ready to be sold," he says, looking proudly over the paint job. "I think I can get 20,000 dollars for it."

"These cars are getting more and more expensive, but they are still cheaper than those registered in Gaza," prices of which have risen because of the blockade, he says.

The demand for cars in Gaza, home of 1.5 million people half of whom are under 18, has shot up after the 22-day war that Israel waged there at the turn of the year in response to rocket fire.

Out of 55,000 cars officially registered, several hundred were destroyed in the fighting and hundreds of others have stopped running because of lack of spare parts, says Adnan Abu Odeh, director general of the Hamas transport ministry.

The Hamas government says it will consider the tunnels legal until the blockade is lifted.

The Rafah municipality charges a 10,000 shekel (2,500 dollar/1,800 euro) fee to open a smuggling tunnel and while the transport ministry officially refuses to register the smuggled cars it is possible to obtain the necessary documents.

Owners of imported cars can obtain registration papers from a special department of the Hamas-controlled police, which issues temporary licence plates.

2010 Bmw X1 at the Frankfurt Motor Show

The X1 SUV, which will go on sale in the in October, makes its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The BMW X1 will, in effect, replace the X3 at the base of BMW’s SUV range when the second generation of that model arrives in 2010.

Priced from €24,500, the X1 will let buyers have the option to get either the standard rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It’s something that has prompted BMW officials to describe it as “more a crossover than an off-roader.” The X1 also has an estate car-like styling. Rather than an upright, rugged look of traditional SUVs, the X1 went for a somewhat low and rakish profile that has similarities with BMW’s latest design lineage. Continued after the jump!

Very prominent on the X1 is a large kidney grille attached to a massive front bumper and a deeply etched swage line drawn in the flanks. The X1 actually came about due to a decision to bring the X3 further upmarket. If you put the two cars side by side, it is observed that they bear about the same size. The X1 is only 116mm shorter, 57mm narrower and 130mm lower than the X3, at 4454mm long, 1798mm wide and 1545mm high. With regards to the range’s diesel counterparts, there are three 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engines with 141bhp, 175bhp and, in twin-turbocharged guise, 201bhp.

The lowest of these three powerplants is able to return combined-cycle fuel consumption of 54mpg and have 136g/km of CO2 emissions. The base petrol and bottom two diesels come with the choice of either rear or four-wheel drive, while the remaining ones are four-wheel drive exclusively. The choice of gearbox can be made between a standard six-speed manual or, depending on the engine sitting up front, an optional six-speed automatic with shift paddles on the face of the steering wheel.

European automakers consider the electro-diesel option

Reporting from Frankfurt, Germany - If you think all hybrid cars are like the Toyota Prius -- mirthless, ugly hair shirts of green conscience -- BMW would like you to meet its Vision: A stealth submarine of a car, lower than a boxing foul, all folded geometry and LED tracer lights. The signature BMW grille glows blue like a reactor cooling pond. The transparent doors open like dragonfly wings.

The all-wheel-drive Vision sport coupe is the Usain Bolt of hybrid cars: 0-60 mph in under 4.8 seconds, top speed of 155 mph, 356 horsepower, and handling and braking comparable to the company's brain-melting M3 coupe.

Fuel economy: 75 miles per gallon. And you can plug it in.

Santa Monica might never be the same.

The Vision is one of several so-called electro-diesels at the Frankfurt auto show that put a typically European spin on Japan's signature eco-tech of hybrids. By combining electric motors and batteries with the huge torque and efficiency of direct-injection turbodiesels, the European automakers are breeding a species of car that delivers V-8 performance with the fuel economy of mopeds.

Behind the menacing grille of the Vision, there's a small 1.5-liter, 163-horsepower three-cylinder turbodiesel engine and a big electric traction motor; arrayed like a capital "I" running down the spine of the car are rows of lithium-polymer batteries. At the rear axle is another electric motor, which gives the car essentially all-wheel drive. Together these components produce a whopping 590 pound-feet of torque, considerably more than your average Lamborghini.

The Vision, which uses batteries developed for Apache attack helicopters, is but a concept for now. But "all the components are very realistic," said Philip Koehn, BMW's director of concept vehicle development. The batteries, the diesel components and electric motors are "off the shelf," he said.

Too flashy for you? At the other end of the performance spectrum is Volkswagen's L1 concept, a hyper-light, tandem-seat oil-burner, like a bobsled for the road. Getting its world premiere in Frankfurt, the L1 is powered by a small, two-cylinder turbocharged direct-injection (TDI) diesel engine and a small electric motor.

The L1's marquee number: 170 mpg, or about four times that of a Honda Insight hybrid. If it comes to market as planned in 2013, the VW L1 could claim the title of most fuel efficient passenger car on the road.

It would also be one of the cleanest. On a carbon-gram-per-mile basis -- that's the emissions metric that Europeans are most concerned with -- electro-diesels can outperform the thriftiest gas hybrids on the planet.

In the case of the Vision, BMW says the car produces 99 grams of carbon per kilometer on its own; plug it in and that number drops to 50 g/km.

To compare, a Toyota Prius has carbon emissions of 89 g/km in the European emission test cycle.

Depending on what you call a hybrid, electro-diesels have already arrived. Audi sells two diesel cars that are equipped with small starter/generators and battery packs to give them stop/start capability (the engine shuts down when the car is put in neutral).

However, Americans think of hybrids as cars with powerful electric motors than can move at low speed on battery power alone. The first such diesel car to come to market will be the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4. Arriving in spring 2011, this mid-size sport-utility vehicle is expected to get about 62 mpg and produce 99 g/km of carbon.

A HYbrid4 version of the company's RCZ sports coupe is all but certain.

For years European automakers, who are the acknowledged masters of turbodiesel technology, have quietly stewed as Asian companies reaped the green-image benefits of hybrid technology.

On a cost and emissions basis, German automakers argued, turbodiesel engines are more efficient. One reason is that diesel fuel itself has a higher energy content than gasoline.

Still, hybrids offer some advantages. They recover kinetic energy as they brake or coast and use it to charge the batteries. They also save fuel by shutting down the internal-combustion engine when the vehicle comes to a stop. And they can move on electric power alone at low speeds, where internal combustion engines are less efficient.

2010 BMW 5-Series

With the 2009 Audi A6 facelift now on sale and the 2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class just a month away from hitting showrooms, attention now turns to the next-generation BMW 5-Series. A class leader since its inception, the 5-Series Sedan and Touring wagon remain crucial vehicles in BMW’s lineup and with the next-gen versions now just months away speculation about the final design has been heating up.

The new 5-Series Sedan is set to arrive in late 2009 for the 2010 model year and heavily disguised prototypes have already been seen testing around the streets of Munich. While those prototypes revealed few details, these latest computer generated rendering gives us a clear indication as to what to expect for the new executive wagon.

Most of the planned changes are skin-deep. Under the new sheet metal, BMW will continue with its new found love of turbocharging. The new 4.4L twin-turbo V8 from the recently revealed X6 is expected to appear in a range topping model, while more turbo-diesel variants are expected to join the lineup as well. BMW is currently developing its second generation common rail system for its diesel powerplants, which will operate at greater pressure for improved performance. The transmission systems will include a six-speed manual and a six-speed Steptronic semi-auto gearbox, however a new eight-speed unit from ZF is also expected to be available.

Performance will also be improved thanks to the extensive use of lightweight materials including carbon-fiber and aluminum. The car’s construction will be a hybrid of an aluminum spaceframe for the front section, and a traditional steel monocoque for the passenger compartment and rear. This will ensure a favorable front-to-rear weight distribution and improved handling. Up front will be an independent suspension with MacPherson struts, with a multi-link layout for the rear. High-performance models will include carbon-fiber body panels to shed even more weight. Check out our previous story for more details including information on the next M5 by clicking here.

Driver held after M8 car chase

A CAR-AZY driver caused chaos on a busy stretch of motorway as he led cops on a high-speed chase that lasted for miles.

Yesterday, the rush hour chase was being compared to an episode of the popular TV show ‘Police Camera Action.’

At one stage, startled motorists were forced to switch lanes as the danger driver sped along the hard shoulder in a BMW car.

After the mad motorist gave pursuing traffic cops the slip, the police helicopter joined in the search and the crew spotted the suspect in part of Renfrew.

During the chase, it’s understood the fleeing driver was involved in a collision with another vehicle.

Minutes later, police surrounded a property in Renfrew after a man was seen going into a tenement close.

Following his arrest, he was taken to a local police station, where he was quizzed before being charged with a series of road traffic offences.

The dramatic chase began shortly before 6pm on Tuesday in the Shieldhall area of Govan.

Police tailed the vehicle onto the M8 motorway’s hard shoulder and along various streets for a couple of miles.

One driver who alerted the Paisley Daily Express said: “It was like something you would see in a cop show on the television.

“A BMW car sped past me while I was on the inside lane of the motorway heading towards Paisley, with the hard shoulder on my left.

“This car came from nowhere and flew by me. Police were giving chase but they didn’t go onto the hard shoulder, they stayed on the motorway lanes with their sirens blaring and lights flashing. Other motorists got out of the way to let the police pass them. I’m not sure where the car which was being chased left the M8.”

There were fears the motorist had managed to evade officers who were in pursuit in their patrol cars but a police helicopter was brought in and its crew spotted the vehicle in the Fulbar Avenue area of Renfrew just after 6pm.

One source said: “By this time, the suspect was on foot after abandoning the car he was in. That vehicle had damage to it following a collision with another vehicle.

“The suspect was in a tenement close and it was there that he was cornered and arrested by a number of officers. He was last seen being escorted into a police car and driven off.”

A police spokesperson confirmed that a 35-year-old man from the Renfrew area has been arrested in connection with the car chase.

“There was an incident on the M8 and in Renfrew at around 6pm on Tuesday,” added the spokesperson. “The incident involved a number of officers in cars and the police helicopter.

“A man was arrested and is now facing a number of road traffic charges. He is expected to appear in court at a later date.”

BMW sport car

The prototype vehicle seen in these scoop photos -courtesy of Bimmerpost- may very well be BMW’s Frankfurt Show EfficientDynamics Vision concept that was announced last week by Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG. Even though at a first glimpse it appears to be a two-door model, judging by the center window line and the door cut-lines above the split side skirts, we’d say that its most likely a four-door coupe model.

Clear the decks for the latest generation BMW M3.

BMW presented the racing version of the new BMW M3 at the Chicago Auto Show.
Powered by a 485 bhp eight cylinder engine, this impressive race car has been designed to compete in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) from 2009 onwards. The car is based on the fourth generation of the BMW M3, the high-performance sports car produced by BMW M GmbH.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen says: "With the sporting genes of the production BMW M3 being clearly evident, developing a racing version of the car was the next logical step. The fact that the road-going vehicle is fitted with a V8 engine as standard provided us with an ideal base. However, the BMW M3 is more than a race car, it has achieved legendary status amongst race fans across the globe. I am convinced that this unique story of the BMW M3 racing cars will now be expanded upon by the addition of further chapters."

"We are very pleased to be returning to the American Le Mans Series with our latest generation BMW M3," states Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO, BMW of North America. "Sports car racing has been part of BMW of North America’s history practically from day one. Just two weeks after the company was formed in March 1975, a BMW CSL won the 12-hours of Sebring. We are confident that the fourth generation M3 will continue the legacy of its two predecessors which combined to win six manufacturer’s championships over nine seasons. As it has been in the past we believe the ALMS is the ideal venue to showcase the potential of the newest BMW M3."

BMW’s 2009 entry into the Sports Car Championship will be overseen by the United States-based Team Rahal Letterman operation. "BMW has an illustrious racing heritage," says co-owner and US motorsport legend Bobby Rahal. "Rahal Letterman Racing is eagerly anticipating, not only becoming part of that heritage, but helping to enhance it. Our dedication to this project will be without equal and we look forward to racing at the front of the grid with BMW in the years to come."

BMW M3 GT4 celebrates 24-hour premiere at the Nürburgring.

The BMW works drivers Jörg Müller (DE) and Andy Priaulx (GB) will line up at the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife on 23rd/24th May 2009. This will also mark the debut of the BMW M3 GT4 at this legendary endurance race.
Müller and Priaulx will be behind the wheel of the BMW M3 GT4 when they race for Schubert Motorsport in the Eifel region. The two drivers, who are normally involved in a battle for glory for BMW in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), will join forces with motor racing journalists Marcus Schurig (DE) and Jochen Übler (DE). The editors of the specialist “sport auto” magazine in Germany have many years of racing experience behind them, and have entered the “Green Hell” numerous times in the past. Together with tyre partner Dunlop, this quartet of drivers has its sights set on a top position in the SP10 class.

BMW Motorsport Director, Mario Theissen, says: “Although we will not be represented by a works team at this year’s 24-hour race, our Customer Racing programme ensures that our fans will still see plenty of BMW racing cars and BMW works drivers. We will be particularly interested in how the new BMW M3 GT4 performs, which is fielded by Schubert Motorsport in cooperation with ‘sport auto’. Jörg Müller and Andy Priaulx are two former overall winners in the Eifel. Spectators can certainly look forward to an exciting weekend.”

The BMW M3 GT4, the youngest addition to the Customer Racing product range offered by the BMW Motorsport Distribution division, made its debut on the legendary Nordschleife in front of many BMW fans at last weekend’s 56th ADAC Westfalenfahrt. After four hours, Müller and Übler were victorious in the SP10 class, and finished 30th overall.

The Nordschleife at the Nürburgring has played a very special role in the history of BMW. BMW drivers have enjoyed countless successes there since the first 24-hour race was held in 1970. Last year alone, one third of the 150 cars that completed the 24-hour race were BMW made. With 114 class victories, BMW is by far the most successful manufacturer in the history of the event.

To date, the marque has 18 overall victories to its name, and has even achieved a one-two on eight occasions. Most recently, the BMW M3 GTR enjoyed double success in 2004 and 2005. Jörg Müller was a member of the winning team back in 2004, while Priaulx was triumphant in 2005.

BMW in confident frame of mind.

This weekend Imola hosts rounds 19 and 20 of the 2009 FIA World Touring Car Championship, which simultaneously marks the end of the European leg of this year’s series. After the victories posted by BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus of BMW Team Germany in BMW’s home races at Oscherleben, the BMW national teams depart for the "Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari” in a confident frame of mind.
Farfus, with 90 points, is just one adrift of world championship leader Gabriele Tarquini (SEAT). The same gap separates BMW (234 points) from leader SEAT in the Manufacturers’ Championship.

Last year Imola was not, though, kind to the BMW drivers, with only Jörg Müller, the team-mate of Farfus, managing to make it to the podium. The long straights of this classic circuit enable SEAT’s drivers to exploit the torque advantage provided by their turbo-diesel engines. Despite carrying 40 kilograms of compensation ballast, Farfus, Priaulx, Müller and Sergio Hernández of BMW Team Italy-Spain fully intend ensuring they are in the best possible shape as regards points ahead of the four final overseas races. The same applies to Hernández’ team-mate Alessandro Zanardi, who is allowed to shed 20 kilograms from his sequential transmission-equipped BMW 320si WTCC for his home race.
